Is Hell Really Eternal?

Have you ever heard a teaching about hell and it sounded correct because someone quoted a few scriptures? I too am guilty of this brothers and sisters. I have heard many different teachings about hell and have posted a few that sounded feasible, though we know that only one can be correct.

In this study, we will look into the scriptures about this fiery furnace, why it was created, and if those who go there burn forever, are punished for a short time and then released, or if the flames cease their existence.

Revelation 2:11: “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.

Revelation 20:14: “Then death and Hell were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”

Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

From Revelation 20:14, it seems like hell may be a place for the wicked to wait until judgment, when they are thrown into the lake of fire.

Mark 9:43-48: “And if your hand offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where the worm dies not and the fire is not quenched. And if your foot offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter lamed into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Where their worm dies not and the fire is not quenched. And if your eye offends you, pluck it out: it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. Where their worm dies not and the fire is not quenched.

Matthew 25:41: “Then He shall say to them on the left hand, depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.”

As we have seen so far, the fires are everlasting and were originally prepared for Satan and his angels. Let us continue to see if people will be punished eternally or if the punishment is temporary.

Matthew 13:41-43: “The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Matthew 25:46: “And these shall go away into everlasting punishment but the righteous into eternal life ”

Luke 16:22-24: “And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.”

Revelation 14:11: Speaking of the judgment of those who take the mark, “And the smoke of their torment ascends up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receives the mark of his name.”

Revelation 20:10: “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

We can conclude from these verses that if the fire is everlasting and the torment is forever, that there is not going to be an escape after a certain amount of time and people will not just cease to exist.

Philippians 3:18-19: “(For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)”

2 Thessalonians 1:9: Speaking of when Christ returns to earth with his angels and destroys the wicked.Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;”

This does not seem like the kind of destruction that destroys the soul where it ceases to exist, it's the kind that tortures forever, throughout all eternity.

Hebrews 9:27: “And inasmuch as it is apportioned to men to die once, and after this, judgment,”

According to scripture, this punishment is forever, it is everlasting. This is why if we truly love people that we will not withhold the gospel from them in fear that they will become offended and hate us. Let them hate us, let them abhor us, let them call us names and march together to go after us with evil hearts; but we must warn the unbelievers, those who have fallen away, those who mock us, and those who say they know God but do not bare the fruits.

Many would not think twice about helping an animal who is afraid and trying to harm them with their claws and teeth; they would without question help the animal. But yet, we so easily run when it's the soul of another person at risk of the lake of fire; think lava.

The second death is eternal separation from God, where the spiritually dead are tormented with fire forever. It is hard to think of anyone going there, especially our own loved ones. This is why,out of love, we try so desperately to get them to listen. But thankfully, if they refuse, scripture tells us that God will wipe away our tears, there will be no mourning for those who did not make it, no crying and no pain. (Revelation 21:4)

It all starts with us who are hearing now, do you truly have a relationship with God or are you following the traditions of men? Are you following Jehovah or have you created your own God to follow? The time to make choices of who to serve is now, because after death, your answers are locked in. Beloved, make certain that your answers are the right ones.
