Is Every Human A Child Of God?

I have heard this told more from every day people who have some form of a belief in a creator, than I have from preachers. I have heard it enough times to include it in this list. Lets examine the scriptures to see if this belief is truth or malarkey. First we are going to look at why people believe this and then we will look at the scriptures.

WHY IT IS BELIEVED

Beginning in Genesis, we are told about creation and are informed of the fact that man and woman were both created in the image of God. Many take this to mean that since God created all of us in his image that he is also the father of all of us. Therefore concluding that God must either be a diabolical father who sends his children to hell or that he lets everybody in his kingdom. Neither can be farther from the truth.

Romans 11:36: For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Colossians 1:16: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Man often tries to tie God to our physical world. We create something and it is said that we are the father/mother of it, whether it be offspring, new technology, or invention. But God is not a physical being, he is a spiritual being. He is not confined to the box of our physical world, he is the creator of it. He is not limited to operating within the bounds of what we can see or touch. He is so magnificently different that many cannot wrap their minds around the fact that everything about God exist in a spiritual realm.

WHAT DOES SCRIPTURE SAY:

Psalm 51:5: Behold, I was shaped in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Ephesians 2:3: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature children of wrath, even as others.

As we have read from these scriptures we were born not of God and as we began to know and commit sin, we became the children of wrath.

We also read in scripture about a group of Jews who had followed Christ around insisting that Abraham was their father. Christ told them that while they were indeed Abraham's seed, they were not children of Abraham because if they were his children, then they would do the works that he did.

In John 8:44-47: You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and he father of it. And because I tell you the truth, you believe me not. Which of you convinces me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe me? He that is of God hears God's words: you therefore hear them not, because you are not of God.

Here is another way to understand it: there are many paintings, drawing, illustrations, and statues made in the image of man, yet none of these have a genetic father or a mother. They all have a creator, but not a parental figure. Its the same with man, we have a creator but our spiritual eternal father is who we choose with our own free will to honor and obey. It is the one whom we choose to follow after and strive to imitate their will and their ways. Most choose the ways of the devil, some choose to follow Christ by imitating the desires of Jehovah.

CHILDREN OF THE DEVIL

Many disregard the verses that speaks of those who are children of the devil. This is not a literal genetic relation but its those who choose to not follow after God.

Acts 3:8-10: Paul refers to a sorcerer as a child of the devil and an enemy of righteousness.

Galatians 2:10: Speaks of false brothers

Ephesians 5:6: The children of disobedience

1 John 3:8-10: He that commits sin is of the devil, for the devil has committed sin from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: And he cannot sin because he was born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither is he that does not love his brother.

The seed spoken of in this verse is not a genetic seed. It is the Holy Spirit. Scripture speaks of your body being a temple that was not made by hands. When you accept Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up dwelling inside of you:

a. 1 Corinthians 3:16: You are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you.

b. 1 Corinthians 6:16-19: Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

c. Ezekiel 36:27: I will put my Spirit in you and cause you to walk in my statues.

d. Romans 8:11: The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead, dwells in you.

e. Galatians 5:18-24: If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, faithfulness, meekness, and temperance.

For those unfamiliar with scripture, the Bible speaks of those who sometimes miss the mark having an advocate through Christ Jesus (1 John 2:1-3) but that we should strive to live a life of righteousness, without sin. And that those who willfully sin have no more sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 10:26).

This last verse does not mean that one can never be saved, it just means that they were not sincere to begin with and they are as Paul put it, a false brother. They look like sheep on the outside, but inwardly are a wolf.

HOW DO WE BECOME CHILDREN OF GOD?

John 1:11-13: He came to his own and his own did not receive him. But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believed on his name. Which were not born of blood, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.

Galatians 4:4-5: But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Ephesians 1:4-5: He has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us to adoption through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the pleasure of his goodwill.

Galatians 3:26-29: For you are all the children of God by faith in Jesus Christ. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there us neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you be Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise.

Many become confused at how one can be a seed of Abraham, again, this is where you must have understanding of the scriptures, as most of us are not a genetic descendant of Abraham but Christ was. So by adoption, through our faith in Christ Jesus and the atonement that he made for us at the cross, we become part of the family; and therefore are heirs in the promise that was given to Abraham by God.

While we are all born creations of God, we are not born children of God. According to scripture, you become a child of God through adoption and that process happens the moment you believe.

John 3:16-17: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

John 10:24-27: Then came the Jews round about him and said unto him, how long will you make us doubt? If you be the Christ, tell us plainly. I told you, and you believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. But you believe not because you are not of my sheep, as I have said unto you, My sheep hear my voice and I know them, and they follow me.

John 3:5-6: Jesus answered and said unto him, Truly I say unto you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:14: But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them because they are spiritually discerned.

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things have become new.

Romans 8:8-10: So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

CONCLUSION

Many cannot begin to grasp that God is not even the same species as we are. We do not possess his creative power, his intelligence, his knowledge, or anything that makes him one worthy of praise. Moses requested of God to look upon his glory but Moses could not see the face of God and live; so God told Moses that he could see his back as he passed by. (Exodus 33:18-23) Absolutely no one is born with this kind of radiant capacity because no one is born as a child of God. Scripture is clear that we become children through adoption, not through our natural fleshly birth.

God will never send any of his children to a fiery furnace, the ones who will see that torment and death will be the children of the devil. Those who have rejected the grace and mercy found in our savior and advocate Yeshua.

Some skeptics will often point out how God had the Israelites kill off tribes of people, again, those were not God's children, they were children of the devil. The ones at Jericho were angel/human hybrids known as Nephilim. We only need to look at cities God destroyed like Sodom and Gomorrah, he sent his angels in to retrieve Lot and his family but left the children of the devil to be consumed by fire.

When you begin to understand the character of God, then you begin to comprehend that God is not the bad guy that non-believers paint him to be. While we may not ever fully grasp everything about God, we know enough to conclude and trust that Jehovah is a holy and just God. Those without eyes to see or ears to hear easily err in their conclusions and overlook that many times throughout history, God did what needed to be done to bring about his purpose and his plans, and some of those may have been protecting his children from the children of the devil.
